Applications are invited for admission to the MA programme in Liberal Arts for the semester commencing in August 2025.

A. General Eligibility Criteria


Qualifying Degree:

Bachelor’s degree in any relevant discipline.

B. Marks / CGPA / CPI requirement in Qualifying Degrees (listed above):


1. A minimum of 60% marks or a CGPA/CPI of 7.0 on a 10-point scale (overall percentage/CGPA/CPI; not just in the majoring subject)

2. A relaxation of marks, or an equivalent grade relaxation, will be granted in reference to the requirement specified in B(1) for candidates belonging to various categories, as per Government of India norms.

If the transcript or grade sheet issued by the Institute/University reports the following:

  • Only marks: percentage will be considered
  • Only grades: CGPA/CPI will be considered. If CGPA/CPI is reported on any scale other than 10 (eg. 4-point/ 8-point scale), an equivalent CGPA/CPI will be calculated as per the following formula: CGPA/CPI on a 10-point scale = (CGPA/CPI Obtained×10)/PS PS = Point scale used by the Institute/University.
  • Both marks and CGPA/CPI: Percentage equivalent of CGPA/CPI, as indicated on the transcript/gradesheet, will be considered. The conversion factor must be available in the transcript/grade sheet/certificate issued by competent authority.

C. AGE LIMIT:


The preferred age limit is 28 years.

Age relaxation of 3 years will be given for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) and 5 years for SC/ST/PD/Female applicants.

The upper age limit shall be determined based on the last date of online application submission.

Only the Date of Birth recorded in the Matriculation/Secondary Examination Certificate or Aadhaar Card will be accepted by IISER Bhopal for determining the age.


D. SELECTION PROCEDURE:


  • Eligible candidates will be required to take an entrance examination. Based on performance in the examination, shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview.
  • The dates of the entrance examination and interview will be communicated to candidates via email and will also be available on the Institute’s website.
  • Travel allowance (TA) will be provided to SC/ST candidates appearing for the interview, as per Government of India norms.

Results

After the last date, all applications will be screened, and a list of eligible candidates for the entrance examination will be published on the Institute’s website. Integrated PhD

Integrated PhD

IISER Bhopal offers Integrated PhD programme in Mathematics and Physics for bright and motivated students who have received their Bachelor’s degree. The programme is aimed to provide young motivated individuals with a rigorous training, desired level of scientific understanding, and a glimpse of global contemporary research at an early stage to enable them to pursue a career in science education and research. After successful completion of the coursework based on the advanced professional courses, students may continue with the state-of-the-art research which leads to the PhD degree. However, the students, who do not intend to carrying out their PhD degree, can exit the programme with an MS Degree after the successful completion of the course work
Admission to the Integrated PhD programme will be made once a year during May/June. Advertisement would be floated between March/April.

For qualifying degree listed under (2), (3) & (4), candidates must also fulfil anyone of the following additional requirements:

  • Valid GATE score
  • Selected through National Eligibility Test – UGC NET /CSIR/NBHM etc. including lectureship (Assistant Professorship)

      Candidates with B.Tech./B.E./B.S. from IITs or BS-MS from IISERs with CGPA/CPI of 8.0 (on a 10 point scale) and above are EXEMPTED from the requirement of a GATE score or any other external fellowship.

    • If the transcript/grade sheet issued by the Institute/University reports:
      i) Only marks, percentage will be considered.
      ii) Only grades, CGPA/CPI will be considered.
      iii) If CGPA/CPI is reported on any scale other than 10 (eg. 4 point/ 8 point scale), an equivalent CGPA/CPI will be calculated as per the following formula:

      CGPA/CPI in a 10 point scale = (CGPA/CPI Obtained × 10) / PS, where PS is the Point scale used by the Institute/University.

      iv) Both marks and CGPA/CPI, percentage equivalent of CGPA/CPI, as indicated on the transcript/grade-sheet, will be considered, if absolute grading was followed. CGPA/CPI ONLY will be considered, if relative grading was followed.

    • A relaxation of 10% of marks, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, will be allowed for candidates belonging to SC/ST/PWD categories and 5% to OBC-NCL/EWS.

    Merely fulfilling the eligibility criteria does not entitle a candidate to be called for the interview.

Course Description for Ph.D. (Common for all 10 Departments):

  • Ph.D. students at IISER Bhopal are involved in quality research that matches the global standard. The program involves rigorous course work and research works. Besides the mandatory requirements, students are encouraged to participate in several professional activities such as workshops, review meetings, and conferences. All doctoral students are also expected to participate in the undergraduate teaching programme of the Institute as a part of their training.

    • Education Qualification for Ph.D. in Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Physics:
      • 10+2 in Science with 60% and UG in Science with 60% and PG in relevant Science Subject with 60%.
    • Education Qualification for Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Data Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science:
      • 10+2 in Science with 60% and UG in Engineering with 60% and PG in relevant Engineering Subject with 60%.
    • Education Qualification for Ph.D. in Economic Sciences:
      • 10+2 in Science with 60% and UG in Economic Sciences with 60% and PG in Economic Sciences with 60%.

  1. Minimum 60% marks/ equivalent grades in 10+2 or equivalent.

AND

  1. Four-year Bachelors’ degree or five-year integrated degree or Master’s degree in respective subject with minimum 60% score or CGPA/CPI of 7.0 on a 10-point scale at both, Bachelor’s and Master’s levels.

AND

  1. 280 score in GRE general test or valid GATE score or any Indian national examinations relevant to the subject of admission to Ph.D.

AND

  1. 60 score in TOEFL/ 6 in IELTS or any other certificate on English proficiency

AND

  1. Selection through online interviews

Preferably not more than 28 years on the date of application (as per passport)
